I did Tai Chi and the experience awoke my insight and intuition as a female. This was a celebration of the powers of the female spirit. The new work was exhibited at the Hexagon Theatre Gallery inn Reading in 1990. ‘Duality’ Gouache, 1990. Perfectly symmetrical apart from one of the women’s hands that holds a paint brush that she has used to make a replica of herself. At the centre of the image, between the two figures, I had positioned the emblem of a scarab beetle that symbolized life renewing itself. I painted this before I fell in love with Sophy who I married, many years later in 2017. ‘City Of Angels’ Gouache, 1990. This represents the icon of the beautiful women as being part of the financial backbone of the Los Angeles Film Industry. Here she is represented holding the moon to demonstrate that she is beyond being objectified. She has the power not to eclipse her inner wealth. ‘Angel of Perception’ Gouache, 1990. Here the female figure is represented as an angel standing above symbols of western knowledge. She holds a drapery in her hands, which is also held in the grip of her mouth, which inadvertently silences her. On the cloth are a myriad of symbols used to communicate numerous concepts. If the icon opens her mouth to speak the cloth will fall free exposing her gender. This was a comment on gender inequality in the world of academe.
